OVERCOMING WORRY #3, GOD IS OUR PROTECTOR

GOD IS OUR PROTECTOR

Aloha!

“We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God.  He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts.” A. W. Tozer

I went on a snow skiing trip to Red River New Mexico with some of my family when I was 24.  We were all looking forward to a fun snow skiing vacation!  The first day of skiing was so much fun!  After a full day of skiing, we ate a nice dinner and then went to bed.  We were in room #13 on the second floor of a ski lodge.

While we were all asleep, my mom was awakened by a faint cry from outside, “Fire!” Mom said, “Get up!  Put your ski suits on, and get out!”  We woke up quickly to blackness because there was no electricity.  We were scrambling to find our clothes.  We quickly dressed leaving behind jewelry and everything we’d brought except for the clothes we’d put on.

One by one we quickly made our way out of the room only to be met by the oncoming fire that was quickly devouring our lodge.  One family member was slow in coming out because of looking for the car keys.  I was on the walkway outside the door yelling for them to come.  You could literally watch the fire covering the building.  The flames seemed to reach a doorway and then jumped across while engulfing the room.

Right before the flames had reached our room, we all made it safely down the walkway and down the steps.  We were all dazed, and yet thankful for the car keys so we could drive away from the lodge.

There were many injured and some deaths.  The couple in the room next to ours didn’t make it out.  Many lost their vehicles because they didn’t have their keys.  Others tried to jump from their back windows and suffered broken bones.  GOD WAS OUR PROTECTOR!

My mom wrote a beautiful song taken from Psalms 121.

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.  He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:  he that keepeth thee will not slumber.  Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.  The Lord is thy keeper:  the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.  The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.  The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:  he shall preserve thy soul.  The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

King David found himself in perilous situations where his safety for himself, his family, and his nation were threatened.  He declared God as his Protector and offered thanks to the Lord and sang a song of praise when God delivered him from his enemies.

Psalms 91:1, 9, 10 “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most high, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”

Psalms 4:8 “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep:  for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Psalms 3:1-3 “Lord, how are they increased that trouble me!  Many are they that rise up against me.  Many there be which say of my soul, there is no help for him in God.  Selah.  But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.”

FUNDAMENTALS FOR PROMOTION

Leadership-Fundamentals-Post

FUNDAMENTALS FOR PROMOTION IN GOD’S KINGDOM

By George W. Black

(Psa 75:6,7 KJV) “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”

  1. PROMOTION IS GOD’S WILL FOR EVERY CHRIST-FOLLOWER

It is desirable that God’s children seek promotion in God’s kingdom for the sake of helping to serve and lead others. Promotion does comes from the Lord, but God’s under-shepherds are always watching for those who will answer the call to greater spiritual responsibility. At Rejoice there are ample opportunities for promotion in the areas of Christian service and ministry for those who will qualify themselves. This is done in a variety of ways.

  1. Church membership – The Lord added daily those who were being saved.
  2. Service attendance – Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.
  3. Financial stewardship – Where your treasure is, there is where your heart is.
  4. Prayer meetings – My House shall be called a house of prayer.
  5. Word level – Study to show yourself approved.
  6. Volunteerism – Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.
  7. Faithfulness in delegated responsibilities – It is required of stewards to be faithful.
  8. Gifting and anointing – A persons gift makes room for them.
  9. Love & Loyalty – A covenant keeper.
  10. Sacrifice – Going the second mile.

  1. FOLLOW-SHIP BEFORE LEADERSHIP

Follow-ship is a part of Disciple-ship, which is a part of Leader-ship Training. A “ship” is a conveyor, a means and method to reach our goal in Christ.

It has been said that if we are too big too follow, we are too little to lead.

Jesus is our direct authority, but He ordained the first 12 apostles to lead the early church after His departure. These ordinations and assignments continue in each generation, and are the “ships” He uses to accomplish His purpose of building the Church and saving the lost. Eph 4:7-16

Christ is being formed in you as you follow Christ in your leaders. As you are mentored and developed, then your lives can become a pattern for others to follow.

Gal 4:19 NKJV  “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you,”

1 Th 1:5-8 NKJV)  “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. {6} And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, {7} so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.”

1 Cor 4:16 NLT  “So I ask you to follow my example and do as I do.”

1 Cor 11:1 NLT  “And you should follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s.”

Phil 3:17 NKJV  “Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.

1 Th 1:6a NKJV  “And you became followers of us and of the Lord…”

Heb 6:12 KJV  “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

  1. MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS ARE VITAL TO PROMOTION

Mentoring is having a spiritual coach. Those desiring greater spiritual development and ministry involvment must understand the need for a mentoring relationship with pastors and leaders. Even if a person has been a Christian for many years, and may have already participated in leadership or ministry in other churches, there is still a need to have the spiritual DNA of the Rejoice Church imparted to an aspiring leader before a person will be capable of helping us further the vision and ministry of this church.

For a young Christian this is usually not a problem because they understand their need of training and discipleship. But for a more mature Christian this is often a humility test. God has not sent a person to this church to teach us, but rather to be taught by us. Until a person can submit to the leadership and vision of this church, and desire to grow in new ways, they will not be properly equipped to help us lead this church in the vision God has given us.

God does not lead His church with a mixed multitude. We have a clear understanding of our calling and purpose. Only after a person has understood and embraced the vision of the house can they begin to know how their gift can best serve the church.

(Gen 14:14 NKJV)  “Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.”

(Num 11:4 NKJV)  “Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat?”

(Mat 6:22 KJV)  “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”

The pastors and other leaders offer mentoring constantly in group settings. Bonding and relationship building take place before, during, and after these meetings. Then one-on-one relationships flow from these connection points and grow. The pastors are always available for appointments when needed. But those interested in a mentoring relationship need to come where the pastors are and do what the pastors do if this is something a person desires. This is never forced…it is strictly optional. It is always up to you. This is not a season of you serving us, but rather of us serving you, teaching and imparting. And this happens little by little as a person takes advantage of the opportunities that are available.

For those that have already been leaders, it can be hard to be on the receiving end of things after you have been conditioned your whole life to serve others. But in a new church, this is how it needs to be. It is time for you to humble yourself and let God promote you in due time. Perhaps it is also a time of healing and redirection as well.

(1 Pet 5:6-8 NLT)  “So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you. {7} Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you. {8} Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.”

  1. CORRECTION IS NOT REJECTION, IT IS RE-DIRECTION

Many people come to Rejoice that are broken, but don’t know it. We didn’t break them, but as leadership pressure is applied, the brokenness that was already in a persons life may begin to manifest. “Father wounds”, hurts, pains, disappointments, abandonment, authority issues, etc. are not unusual in todays fractured society. But our calling as a church is to make disciples, which means we must touch these wounds if they are ever to be healed. When we do, we manifest the pain in that wound, like a dentist or doctor. We can reject the dentist/doctor, or we can submit to the healing process through trust.

Unfortunately many potential leaders leave the process of discipleship because they don’t understand that God directed them to Rejoice so the Master Potter could make a new vessel. (Jer 18:2-6) They want to hang on to the old vessel when God is wanting to remake the vessel with a new design, new DNA, new vision, new way of doing things, etc.

(Personal story of Bojangles the Dachshund.)

When anyone joins Rejoice, it is a time of receiving. And as a person catches the vision God has given our house, it will become your vision and your house too. It’s kind of like the transplant of an organ from one body to another. The new body and new organ take time to grow together until they are compatible. The organ needs the new body to survive, but compatibility takes time. You have left a previous church (or no church)  and are now in a completely different one. This one is never going to change to be what you came from or were used to. But if you believe God has truly sent you here, then you have to accept that God already knows who we are and what we are, and that a new member needs what this church has to offer to be healthy and fully developed for your destiny.

It takes a while for you to pick up the spiritual DNA of a new church, especially a church that does not have the same roots or background. That is why the VIP class is such an important part of the process. The time will come when you will have learned the vision and direction we are going, and can then begin making a contribution that will help us build toward the vision God has already given us. Through faithfulness, humility and service, you will find your place on the TEAM. But in the beginning is a season of learning and growing in new ways. If you have found change to be a stretch for you, here is a suggestion: rather than worrying about how Rejoice can change to match your idea of what church should be, maybe the focus needs to be “Lord, what do you want me to learn and grow in at Rejoice since I know you have called me to be here.”

To enter into a mentoring relationship with a pastor or other leader, here are several helpful points:

  1. The lesser always seeks the greater. Don’t expect a pastor or other leaders to spend much time seeking you out. You must seek them out. If you want what they have, then you must understand the need to make your wishes known by your actions, not just your words. This is more than setting up one or two appointments. It means going where they go, doing what they do, coming early and staying late, putting yourself out to receive from their anointing. Impartation doesn’t come just from Sunday morning preaching. It comes from submitting your life to God’s ordained leader, praying together with your leader, working together with your leader, building relationships with your leader in the context of group activities. You will never have a one on one with someone in leadership until you have been willing to join yourself to their “band of followers.”

(1 Ki 19:19-21 NKJV)  “So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him. {20} And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” {21} So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.”

2. Faithfulness. If you want a mentoring relationship with a leader, learn to be consistently faithful. No one will give you much time if you don’t demonstrate a high degree of respect for your leaders time. Faithfulness is to be an attribute of our character and nature if we growing into the image of Jesus Christ.

As in the old Timex watch commercial, faithfulness is the virtue that “takes a licking and keeps on ticking.” Faithfulness says of temptation, “other may, but I may not.” It rolls out of bed early on Sunday in plenty of time to finish important assignments. Faithfulness is punctual, never late. Faithfulness doesn’t make excuses for why it cannot, it makes excuses for why it can. Faithfulness is indefatigable. It says “if its to be, its up to me”, and then fearlessly charges ahead to the finish line. Faithfulness is firstly faithful to God, paying its tithes to honor God before taking a thought for itself. Faithfulness doesn’t have to be pursued, begged, coddled, coaxed, or pandered to. It scorns these baser attitudes as the character flaws of the unfaithful. No, faithfulness says “though none go with me, still I will follow.” Let the virtue of faithfulness be developed in your life, and God will see a reflection of Himself in you.

(1 Tim 3:10-11 NKJV)  “But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. {11} Likewise their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.”

(Prov 20:6 NKJV)  “Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, but who can find a faithful man?”

3. In every area where you may be interested in helping your church grow and develop, please keep one vital principle in mind that we will not violate:

“Those who lead must first lead in prayer.”

(2 Chr 7:14 NKJV)  “”if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

OVERCOMING WORRY #2, GOD IS OUR PEACE

2015-08-25 Worry 2 Peace

GOD IS OUR PEACE

Aloha!

“When too many worries are blaring in ear-splitting volume, peace is drowned out.” Gregory L. Jantz, PhD, founder of the Center for Counseling and Health

Real life is filled with uncertainty and we are sure to face overwhelming situations at some point in our lives.  The important thing to remember is that no matter how tumultuous our lives may be, God is our peace through every storm! When you have the peace of God in your heart and life, you can weather the storms by His grace.  John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

I lived in a little rural town at one time where it seemed like everybody knew each other. It was much like you’d picture Mayberry. One day I was in the church parking lot and noticed an ambulance coming and realized I knew the person they were stopping for across the street. I quickly went to her and started praying for her even though they’d already placed her on a gurney.  The EMT’s stepped back as I prayed and the peace of God was right there as I called on the Lord.  Little did I know she’d had an anxiety attack and God’s peace was just what she needed!  Amazingly the paramedics allowed me to continue praying because she’d calmed down as I prayed for her.

God knows right where we are and cares about every detail in our lives. He is a very present help in the time of trouble.  He is our peace. We can choose to let God’s perfect peace rule and reign in our hearts and lives.  Jesus gives us His peace!  We can accept the peace of God for ourselves. It’s much like receiving a gift.

If we choose to excessively worry, it can wreak havoc on our health.  Rather than allowing that to happen, trust God and allow His peace to fill your whole being.  Storms will come, Jesus spoke to the raging storm, “Peace be still.”  Speak to the storms in your life. Sometimes they will be still, and other times, God will give you peace through them.

Isaiah 43:1-3 “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned;  neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  For I am the Lord thy God.”

“Though worry may try to take over our mind and emotions, we can remember that God’s amazing peace is available to us now, in this moment.”

OVERCOMING WORRY #1, GOD IS IN CONTROL

OVERCOMING WORRY #1, GOD IS IN CONTROL

Aloha!

“When legitimate concern morphs into toxic panic, we cross a boundary line into the state of fret.  No longer anticipating or preparing, we take up membership in the fraternity of Wo-Be-Me.  Christ warned against this.” Max Lucado

I am a worry wart and am so excited about this devotional that
directly addresses worry! Come with me as we learn how to take down this giant in our lives!  Take courage, “God is in control!” My
confidence is in Christ!

“Worry has a way of slipping into our lives in a variety of ways.
Sometimes worst-case scenarios, but more often than not every day
concerns, consume our thoughts and energy.”

Life is filled with change. We live in uncertain times that tempt us
to worry. Worrying doesn’t solve or fix problems.  It’s actually
counterproductive and can sap the life right out of you. Jesus told
the disciples to,”Fear not!”  He’s telling us to Fear not also!

Catch yourself the next time you begin to worry. Know that God is in
control!  Let His perfect peace rule and reign in your heart. Even if
you begin by taking baby steps of faith trusting God with everything,
you’ll soon find that you are courageous and God is bigger than
anything you’ll ever face.

“God is with you-always.  You can choose to face uncertainty with
faith and begin to walk in greater levels of confidence, contentment,
and joy, peace, security, and calmness.”

TRUSTING GOD #12, ELIJAH’S DIVINE VISITATION

Elijah, 8-11-15

ELIJAH’S DIVINE VISITATION

Aloha!

“Elijah’s story reminds us that wherever we are and whatever we’re doing, God can draw near.”

Elijah was a prophet who spoke boldly for the Lord.  When Queen Jezebel put a bounty on his head, Elijah ran and tried to hide.  He was worried and afraid of this wicked and powerful Queen.  God wouldn’t let Elijah go!  Elijah had a divine visitation!  When he was hiding in a cave, God sent an angel to bring him bread to eat.  Elijah soon found that God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire; but in a gentle whisper!  He met God at the cave’s entrance and his worries and stress were alleviated! God drew near to Elijah and spoke to him.   His concerns were heard and met! 1 Kings 18, 19

“Even when we are emotionally, spiritually, and physically overwhelmed by stress and worry, God longs to speak to our souls in a gentle whisper and assure us of His presence and purpose for our lives.”

Newly married, I was thrilled to pieces because we were building our first home!  It was exciting to be able to pick out colors, wall paper, flooring, etc.  After a few weeks of watching it come together, I felt like something was wrong and that we weren’t supposed to buy the house.  Wanting a clear answer, my husband and I sought the Lord fervently in prayer and in searching the scriptures.  As soon as I read Micah 2:10, I knew we had our answer.  “Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest:  because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.”

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy and isn’t always fun.  It can be very anguishing and even frustrating in choosing the right thing to do especially when you don’t understand why.  We paid a lot to get out of the contract and soon found ourselves back at square one of still desiring to have a home of our own.  After a few months, we discovered that the whole neighborhood where the house was being built had a bad water system.  The houses dropped in prices drastically because it was not safe to live there.  It’s vital to have a personal relationship with the Lord and to seek Him.

Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Proverbs 3:5, 6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.”

“Don’t give up on God because He won’t give up on you!  He’s able!”

THE VALLEY IS NOT YOUR DESTINATION

Tom Schumacher

THE VALLEY IS NOT YOUR DESTINATION

Pastor Tom Schumacher

Ezekiel 37:1-3 NKJV “The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. And He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” So I answered, “O Lord God, You know.”

  1. Although Ezekiel’s vision applied to the children of Israel…we can apply the principle of this vision to us today.

Right information leads to the right destination.

  1. Valleys are not destinations.

Psalms 23:4 NKJV “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Proverbs 4:25-26 NKJV “Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.”

  1. Jesus told His followers to pick up the Cross…crucify the flesh, deny yourselves, govern your soul.

Luke 9:23 NKJV “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

  1. The bones in the valley are dry because they are meant to be connected to the body.
  1. Just as the Prophet was sent to the valley…God will send His voice to the valley of your life.
  1. God has a message for your valley and breath for your bones.
  1. When God speaks (Genesis 1:2), light order, and design come into being.

Ezekiel 37:11 NKJV “Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’”

  1. God’s truth will bring water to the bones, hope where there is no hope, meaning to your design.
  1. God has a message that you may live again. God has put a message in YOU that others may hear and see and live again.

REACHING YOUR DESTINATION

REACHING YOUR DESTINATION

George W. Black

“Then they were eager to let Him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!” John 6:21 NLT

Have you ever heard the expression, “I’m not sure where I’m going, but I’m making good time?” According to this sixth chapter of John the disciples had been rowing their boat in a gale with rough seas for about three or four miles. That’s a long way. And it had taken a long time, for they began their journey at dark.

Another Gospel records this John 6:21 event happening in the fourth watch of the night, which is the last watch before morning. WOW! Talk about a lot of human effort with little result.

Surely there was at least one disciple that said “are we there yet?” The answer was no. The Sea of Galilee is eight miles wide. At about three or four miles, the disciples are still only half way across. Talk about a discouraging moment, they had one.

But Jesus had a plan. He is the Master Teacher, and His classroom is all of nature. He is teaching His disciples one of the most important lessons of their future ministry…human effort alone can never accomplish the will of God.

Notice that when Jesus is welcomed into their boat, immediately they were at the other side. ‪#‎Hmmm‬ ‪#‎Selah‬ ‪#‎ThinkAboutIt‬

What boat are you rowing by yourself without Jesus aboard? Your marriage, career, child-rearing, church-life, private-life, etc.

Had a few storms that slowed your progress?

Time to get a clue.

No matter how smart, talented, educated, or whatever else we may think gives us an advantage, if we are rowing without Jesus in the boat, we will get tired before we arrive at our destination, if ever.

Christianity is not about trying harder, but rather it is surrendering every area of our lives to the Lordship and leadership of the One who already has the blueprint. When you let Him in your boat, it becomes His boat, and things will change.

“Then they were eager to let Him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!”

TRUSTING GOD #11, RUTH’S AMAZING RESCUE

RUTH’S AMAZING RESCUE

Aloha!

“The faithful person lives constantly with God.”  Clement of Alexandria

“Though we are faced with seasons of loss, and pain, God has a plan to not only provide for us but also heal us.  We simply need to turn and trust Him.”

Late one night, I remember my Mom calling my brother, sister, and me to tell us that our Dad had just died.  She was long distance at a hospital. After we hung up the phone, we joined hands and prayed for her and then went to our rooms to go to bed because we had school the next day. As I was going down the hall, I felt overwhelmed by waves of grief and felt devastated that I’d never see my Daddy again.

All at the same time, I felt the Lord comfort me as He spoke to my heart, “I am your Heavenly Father and I will never leave or forsake you.”   We’d all recently come to know the Lord in a very real and powerful way.  I was fourteen at the time.  Through the months and years that followed, I’ve missed my Dad greatly and I look forward to seeing him again in heaven.  I’ve also been comforted by the Holy Spirit and have found great peace in trusting God with my whole life.

“The book of Ruth demonstrates the power of God to transform a life from hopelessness and sorrow to hopefulness and joy.  Naomi chose to put her hope in God and found God working through the unexpected love story of Ruth and Boaz to provide for her.  However, the story doesn’t end there.”

Ruth’s husband and his brother died.  She experienced heartbreak and loss and –needed a new beginning.  She went with her mother-in-law back to her far away homeland in search of food.  She left all that was familiar and accepted the one true God as her own Lord and trusted Him.

Ruth had a heart of obedience and went and gathered wheat at the edges of the fields as Naomi had instructed her to do. It was common for widows and orphans to do so at that time.  She worked very hard and was noticed by many.  Her reputation was that of a loving, loyal, and kind person.  Boaz (a wealthy kinsman to Naomi’s husband) also noticed her and soon Ruth found more food in his fields.  Eventually Boaz married Ruth.    Ruth 1-4, Leviticus 19:9-10

Redemption is something we could never do for ourselves!  Boaz redeemed Ruth by giving her a life and a future.  Jesus gave His own life in order to be our redeemer, the One who saves us from our sins.  He too gives us a life of hope and a future.

TRUSTING GOD #10, ABRAHAM’S BIG DECISION

Kauai 10 Abraham (1)

ABRAHAM’S BIG DECISION

Aloha!

“Worrying about past mistakes only robs us of future progress. God will still forgive, teach, and use us for His glory.  Even when we fail Him, He never fails us.”

On this journey called “Life,” let God be God!

It’s much easier to drive a car when you are looking at where you are going rather than looking in the rear view mirror.  If you continue to look in the rear view mirror, (at past mistakes) you can’t see where you’re going.  Don’t let your past cloud your future!

There are times we make mistakes. Just don’t stay there.  When you fall down, pick yourself up by the scruff of the neck and keep going!  Proverbs 24:16 “The righteous falls seven times, but arise again.”

There’s part of a song I used to sing to my kids when they were little.  “Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off.  Start all over again.”  It helped when they’d fallen down not to focus on their having fallen, but on getting back up.  Before you knew it, they were playing and having fun.

When we make mistakes or wrong choices, we have a choice to focus on our failures, or to get back up off the ground and focus on God.  Be quick to repent and turn back to God.  Trust Him and live a life of faith rather than worry.

“Abraham left behind a legacy of extraordinary faith and trust even though he made mistakes.”

Abraham, originally called Abram, lived a life of adventure following God.  We also find Abraham is one of the “Heroes of Faith” in Hebrews 11.  Abraham had a big calling on his life.  Even though God made promises and spoke to him, he didn’t completely trust God at times.  Abraham allowed worry and stress affect him and his decisions.  Genesis 12, 20 He lied about his beautiful wife by saying she was his sister two times! In spite of his lack of faith and failures, God intervened and saw Abraham through.

Abraham learned from his mistakes and slowly learned to trust God and make better choices.  He passed a huge test with flying colors when God asked him to sacrifice his own son, Isaac.  He trusted God through the whole ordeal and God provided a lamb!

“We can choose to walk in obedience now, regardless of past errors in judgment.  The best is yet to come.”

Gifts and Calling, What are my primary and secondary gifts I have been given

THE GIFTS IN ROMANS 12, 1 CORINTHIANS 12, AND EPHESIANS 4

Rom 12:6-8 NLTIn his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”

Eph 4:11-12 NLT “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

1 Cor 12:7-11 NLT “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”

“Conformed to His Image, by Ken Boa”

A spiritual gift is a manifestation of the Spirit … given for the benefit of all (1 Cor. 12:7). As a supernatural endowment, its source is always the Holy Spirit, and its purpose is the building up of others to the glory of God.

  1. Prophecy (Rom. 12:6; 1 Cor. 12:10, 28-29; 14:1-40; Eph. 4:11)–The ability to receive and proclaim a message from God. This could involve the foretelling of future events, though its primary purpose as seen in 1 Corinthians 14:3 is forth-telling: one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation. This gift provides a word from God to a specific group, not the normative Word of God to all believers. Some maintain that prophecy is still operative in this sense today, while others say that the nearest current equivalent is Spirit-empowered preaching.
  2. Service (Rom. 12:7)–The ability to identify and care for the physical needs of the body through a variety of means. The Greek word for this gift is the same as that for ministry or deacon, but the gift should not be confused with the office.
  3. Teaching (Rom. 12:7; 1 Cor. 12:28-29; Eph. 4:11)–The ability to clearly explain and effectively apply the truths of God’s Word so that others will learn. This requires the capacity to accurately interpret Scripture, engage in necessary research, and organize the results in a way that is easily communicated.
  4. Exhortation (Rom. 12:8)–The ability to motivate others to respond to the truth by providing timely words of counsel, encouragement, and consolation. When this gift is exercised, believers are challenged to stimulate their faith by putting God’s truth to the test in their lives.
  5. Giving (Rom. 12:8)–The ability to contribute material resources with generosity and cheerfulness for the benefit of others and the glory of God. Christians with this spiritual gift need not be wealthy.
  6. Leadership (Rom. 12:8)–The ability to discern God’s purpose for a group, set and communicate appropriate goals, and motivate others to work together to fulfill them in the service of God. A person with this gift is effective at delegating tasks to followers without manipulation or coercion.
  7. Mercy (Rom. 12:8)–The ability to deeply empathize and engage in compassionate acts on behalf of people who are suffering physical, mental, or emotional distress. Those with this gift manifest concern and kindness to people who are often overlooked.
  8. Wisdom (1 Cor. 12:8)–The ability to apply the principles of the Word of God in a practical way to specific situations and to recommend the best course of action at the best time. The exercise of this gift skillfully distills insight and discernment into excellent advice.
  9. Knowledge (1 Cor. 12:8)–The ability to discover, analyze, and systematize truth for the benefit of others. With this gift, one speaks with understanding and penetration. Some also associate supernatural perception with this gift.
  10. Faith (1 Cor. 12:9)–The ability to have a vision for what God wants to be done and to confidently believe that it will be accomplished in spite of circumstances and appearances to the contrary. The gift of faith transforms vision into reality.
  11. Healing (1 Cor. 12:9, 28, 30)–The ability to serve as a human instrument through whom God supernaturally cures illnesses and restores health. The possessor of this gift is not the source of power, but a vessel who can only heal those diseases the Lord chooses to heal. Inner healing, or healing of memories is sometimes associated as another manifestation of this gift.
  12. Miracles (1 Cor. 12:10, 28, 29)–The ability to serve as an instrument through whom God accomplishes acts that manifest supernatural power. Miracles bear witness to the presence of God and the truth of His proclaimed Word, and appear to occur most frequently in association with missionary activity.
  13. Distinguishing of spirits (1 Cor. 12:10)–The ability to clearly discern the spirit of truth and the spirit of error (cf. 1 John 4:6). With this gift, one can distinguish reality versus counterfeits, the divine versus the demonic, true versus false teaching, and in some cases, spiritual versus carnal motives.
  14. Tongues (1 Cor. 12:10, 28, 30; 14:1-40)–The ability to receive and impart a spiritual message in a language the recipient never learned. For other members of the body to be edified, this message must be interpreted either by the recipient (1 Cor. 14:13) or by another person with the gift of interpretation (1 Cor. 14:26-28).
  15. Interpretation of tongues (1 Cor. 12:10, 30; 14:5, 13, 26-28)–The ability to translate into the vernacular a message publicly uttered in a tongue. This gift may be combined with the gift of tongues (1 Cor. 14:13), or it can operate separately (1 Cor. 14:26-28).
  16. Apostleship (1 Cor. 12:28,29; Eph. 4:11)–In the New Testament, the apostles were not limited to the Twelve, but included Paul, Barnabas, Andronicus, Junias, and others as well (Acts 14:14; Rom. 16:7; 1 Cor. 15:5,7; 1 Thess. 2:6). As a spiritual gift, this is the ability to begin and/or to oversee new churches and Christian ministries with a spontaneously recognized authority.
  17. Helps (1 Cor. 12:28)–The ability to enhance the effectiveness of the ministry of other members of the body. This is the only usage of this word in the New Testament, and it appears to be distinct from the gift of service. Some suggest that while the gift of service is more group-oriented, the gift of helps is more person-oriented.
  18. Administration (1 Cor. 12:28)–This word, like helps, appears only one time in the New Testament, and it is used outside of Scripture of a helmsman who steers a ship to its destination. This suggests that the spiritual gift of administration is the ability to steer a church or Christian organization toward the fulfillment of its goals by managing its affairs and implementing necessary plans. A person may have the gift of leadership without the gift of administration.
  19. Evangelism (Eph. 4:11)–The ability to be an unusually effective instrument in leading unbelievers to a saving knowledge of Christ. Some with this gift are most effective in personal evangelism, while others may be used by God in group evangelism or cross-cultural evangelism.
  20. Shepherd or pastor (Eph. 4:11)–Peter was commissioned by Christ to shepherd His sheep (John 21:16), and Peter exhorted the elders in the churches of Asia Minor to do the same (1 Pet. 5:2; cf. Acts 20:28). A person with this spiritual gift has the ability to personally lead, nourish, protect, and care for the needs of a flock of believers. Not all people with the office of pastor (elder, overseer) have or need the gift of pastoring or shepherding, and many with this gift do not have or need the office.
  21. Peter Wagner in Your Spiritual Gifts suggests others:
  22. celibacy (the ability to enjoy being single and maintain sexual self-control; 1 Cor. 7:7-9);
  23. voluntary poverty (the ability to renounce material comfort and adopt a life-style of relative poverty; 1 Cor. 13:3);
  24. martyrdom (the ability to display an attitude of joy while suffering or even dying for the faith; 1 Cor. 13:3);
  25. hospitality (the ability to welcome and provide for those in need of food and lodging; Rom. 12:13; 1 Pet. 4:9);
  26. missionary (the ability to minister effectively in a second culture);
  27. intercession (the ability to pray for a long period of time on a regular basis for the ministries and needs of others); and
  28. exorcism (the ability to discern and cast out demons with authority)
  29. music
  30. craftsmanship
  31. ideas, inventions, profitable endeavors to benefit others

  1. Know Where I Am

It only takes one word from God to change my circumstance. That word may come from an unlikely source. Keep myself free to hear God speak. Even Moses was at work when he heard from God and it took a special bush burning to get his attention.

Seek out my next gifts, steps, and opportunities. Knowledge has increased exponentially and allowed us to go where we never could before. Yesterday’s accomplishments are only steps to take us to tomorrow. Let’s not get stuck in yesterday. The 4 minute mile was ruled out for years as impossible for humans and even medically harmful UNTIL someone did it and then there were multiple people within a short time. 1. Know Where I Am Going

High mobilization of spiritual gifts was the key to the rapid multiplication of the church in the New Testament (cf. Rom. 1:11, Eph. 4:12, 2 Tim. 2:2).

Rejoice Vision Statement:

Recover the lost by sharing the joy of God’s love & salvation through Jesus Christ (the gospel) with everyone;

Empower them to become fully devoted Christ-followers (disciples) who embrace God’s purpose for their life;

Deploy them into their ministries in the church, & their mission in the world, so they can glorify God everywhere.

Growth requires pain, even modern gyms carry the message of “no pain, no gain”. We have to embrace the idea of doing the work to see the results. Let’s work together.

Take the step because until you do, help will not be revealed.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.  Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kill countless ideas and splendid plans:  that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.  A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it.  Boldness has genius, magic and power in it. Begin it now.”  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749-1832
